Choosing Between Landscape and Portrait Layouts for Your Photos

23 August 2012

Portrait or Landscape?

Before you determine whether you should take a portrait or landscape photo, you first need to consider the following:

  • How many people will be in the picture?
  • Do you want your picture to focus mostly on the subject, background or both?

When taking a picture of one to two people, it usually works best to take a portrait photo (any more than two and you may need to take a landscape shot!). A portrait photo tends to focus more on the subject and less on the background. However, if you are taking a picture against a beautiful backdrop and would like to include your subjects in the photo as well, a landscape shot would be your best bet.

Landscape photos allow you to focus on the background image more than a portrait photo does. So, if you want to take a picture of the sun setting and include your friends in the picture too, here’s what you do: place your subjects off-center so you can really get a feel for the background environment behind them, and snap your photo! The end result will be a picture that focuses on your friends AND the beautiful backdrop!
